It is fitting that the themes of the book revolve around the elevation of beauty over substance. If one were chart out the plot of the book, it might seem to be a bit simple, even predictable, but the magic of this work is not the story it tells, but the way in which it is told. Oscar Wilde is among the most talented wordsmiths ever to put pen to paper. The elegance and wit with which he manages to craft his words are so masterful that I often found myself re-reading passages for their meaning because I had become so lost in their beauty.
This is not to say that the story is merely a medium for Wilde's brilliant word-craft. There are deep themes of art, beauty, and corruption to be explored, and some of the books characters, especially the ever-cynical Lord Henry Wotton, are so engaging that they may make your real-life friends and acquaintances seem terribly dull in comparison. There is a lot to take away from this book, just don't expect any mind-bending plot twists.
All-in-all I really enjoyed reading The Picture Of Dorian Gray. It's a bit like walking through a gallery of fine paintings. You will marvel at the sheer artistry evident in every word, and, if you are like me, you'll probably find yourself immediately wanting to go back and read it again, becuase, like fine art, you'll feel there is so much to take in that a first read barely scratches the surface.
