When I read Catcher in the Rye in both high school and college , I enjoyed the work even though I didn't connect with main character Holden very much. I still could understand him and his point of view. This time around, however, I find that the book isn't nearly as engaging. As an adult, I found Holden petulant, immature, far too negative. I had a hard time finishing the story because I also found the writing over done, the descriptions and character developments too wordy yet also stale and stiff. I really disliked the story on this third read. (read less)

I had read this as a high-schooler and remember really enjoying it. This time around (many years later) I had a harder time relating to Holden. My adult perspective found him both immature and negative. Still enjoyed the story though.
