In 1910, Ellen marries Seattle oil magnate John Rimbauer. Her husband builds Ellen a palatial new mansion she calls Rose Red. After a horrible crime takes place at the construction site, the house becomes infected with evil.

Living in an increasingly unhappy marriage with a man who mentally abuses her, Ellen turns to her African maid, Sukeena, for companionship and comfort. She also immerses herself in the continued construction of Rose Red. As the house gets 'stronger', people begin to die or disappear within her walls and Ellen becomes possessed and obsessed with Rose Red.
