The last time I picked up Snow Crash a couple of years ago, I abandoned it after reading 2-3 pages. I was coming out of an overdose of Cryptomonicon, which I had abandoned halfway, after numerous efforts at reading it.
However, two years later and having achieved what I could call, some sort of reading maturity, I think this book is great, as far as science fiction goes. You will like it especially if you are a computer hacker.

Snow Crash was the first Stephenson book I read, many years ago. It made me a fan and turned me on to cyberpunk sf like Gibson.
I'm sure reading it first was a good move, as it gave me strength to persevere with has later books - cryptonomicon and the barogue cycle in particular.
His writing is genius, but his process must be stream-of-consciousness in order to produce the sheer volume that he does. It requires a special kind of commitment to pick up a 1000+ page book (and know it is only the first of a series)!
NB:I hear his new book Anathem is his best ever

pratalife: I still havent developed the patience for Gibson though. I can understand him being the father of the genre and all that, but I have a feeling writers like Neal Stephenson and Cory Doctorow will supersede him.
